Syncing: do you sync to external devices?

Postby bargiel » Fri Apr 20, 2007 7:36 pm

Hi there!

I'd like to get some feedback regarding the syncing issue. I noticed that many problems with iGTD syncing happen to those of you who sync their data to external devices - via iSync or Missing Sync. So...

...please post here if you sync with external phones/PDAs (please provide the way you do it - iSync/other apps) - and please tell me if you have/had any problems with iGTD syncing.

I'll really appreciate your help. Thanks!

I sync with a T-Mobile MDA using Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. Yes, I have problems.

Missing Sync can be very flaky. There is a separate OS process created for each plugin that is active (contact, calendar, todo, etc). Many times I have to kill all of those processes and then restart them in order for things to work. I put up with it because the device is pretty nice. I can take most of my digital information with me whereever I go.

I sync to a Treo 600 via Missing Sync. I haven't enabled iCal syncing until version 1.3.4.3 because I know it can be a big source of problems.

Syncing is essential for me, because my Treo is my mobile inbox (I input "stuff" constantly), my errands and calls list, etc. I only sync certain categories.

It's been pretty much fine so far, I'll be sure to report any issues. I did have some initial problems but they are old friends of mine (related to the creation of new categories in the Treo and caused by Missing Sync).

Palm sync, data problems

Postby Michael » Sat Apr 21, 2007 6:19 pm

Hi,

I have synced my tasks to my Palm OS 4.something machine (it's an Alphasmart Dana, in case that matters). After I did so, I had duplicate contxts calendars, one in my iGTD Group Folder, and the new ones via iSync from the Palm.

As a result, I stopped syncing to the Palm. It wasn't worth it. I don't use it for task management, really (my laptop does that), and it was really just the cool factor. It wasn't so cool, though.

The rest of iGTD is great, I love it. Thanks for a great product.

I sync in two ways
To my Palm Zire via Missings sync. That gets the iCal data across (I used to use Shadow Plan as a bridge between the PDA and Omnioutliner when I was trying kGTD)

The otherway is to my moleskine via DoBeDo, a printer and PagePacker!

(The second way is reliable but can be hard on the eyes!)

I'd love to synch online though - then I can access from work (PCs... spit!)

I sync with MissingSync (only from mac to pda). Usually through Bluetooth. No problems at all.

HIlarious! I too, sync to a Treo (650), and have had a devil of a time with MarkSpace  "support" evil: . . . sigh. . .

Once it's working right (cross fingers, crucifix, holy water, make sure all categories are the same on Palm first, sync iGTD to iCal first, call upon unspent Karma of maniacal Fishermen waiting to be born. . . .

It's pretty nice. I particularly like the fact that there's an INBOX that syncs right to iGTD. MUST HAVE, it's really nice.

When using kGTD, I synced to my iPod with kGTD2go. Probably an easier deal than most people! :D

I sync via Missing Sync to Palm Tungsten E2 from iCal, not directly from iGTD. I have had problems though the latest release has worked well. The most common problem has been the loss of the projects list in ical and igtd, not the actual events and a message of name value is missing though I sent the relevant file to you.
Despite these problems, it is a great program. I wonder if while you are working out bugs, that the saves don't overwrite the current data but create new backups. That way if there is a problem, it is easy to roll back.

I sync to a Motorola RAZR V3 phone using iSync and it now works with no problems whatsoever.

It's handy to keep an eye on what's happening using Activity Monitor, as sometimes it seems everything's locked up when it's actually just very busy.

Just a heads-up. The bug with syncing where only flagged categories are synced if the display is set to "With Flags" is driving me nuts!

i own a motorola slvr L7 and and i sync with iCal. the only problem is that iCal doesn't sync to-dos with my motorola phone, as i found out when i went to the isync page on the apple website. this is the why i'm very much looking forward to the 1.4 version, because you've specified in your roadmap you intend to allow us to sync tasks with due dates as events. :) but iGTD's a great app.

Ok, here are a few quirks I just found. Follow me:

1. I synced iGTD to iCal but forgot to sync iCal to Treo.
2. I entered a bunch of tasks in Treo.
3. I synced Treo to iCal.
4. I synced iGTD. The new stuff did NOT make it to iGTD.
Here I have a doubt, based on past experiences and other software: it's possible that after syncing the Treo to iCal, you need to actually open iCal so the synced stuff gets really added to the calendars. So:
5. I opened iCal and the stuff from the Treo was there.
6. I synced iGTD, and here's the BUG:

--> All contexts with new stuff from the Treo were duplicated in iGTD, including a new context "Inbox".

Next steps:

1. Moved the tasks and deleted the extra contexts, synced again. Tasks did NOT make it to iCal.
2. Unregistered from Sync services, deleted all the iCal calendars. Sync. The stuff is in iCal again. :D

At this point I'd like to point out that iGTD seems to recreate the iCal calendars quite often (haven't figured out the exact circumstances) so it's pointless to assign them colors, order or subgroups: very often they will be recreated and lose those settings.

3. Cross fingers. Sync to Treo. The sync does take long. Really long. I'm scared by this point (typing this entry in "real time"). The sync fails, I'm posting this and will update later.
