What Are your contexts?

Postby graymerica » Wed May 09, 2007 3:08 pm

I was wondering what kinds of context people are using. I have read the GTD book, but can always use more ideas.

Contexts

Big Ideas
Mobile Phone (the only on that syncs to my cell)
Free Time At the computer
Quickies
On the Weekend
Phone Calls
Office 1
Office 2
Office 3 (I work out of three offices)

What are others using?

I didn't answer the poll, since I'm currently using 20 in iGTD.

Work-related contexts prefixed with @ sign.

Like Cottser, I use the "@" sign in front of my contexts to help me make sure they really are physical/relational places, not projects. And I'm a big believer in keeping the list as short as possible, so I don't have to think much when assigning contexts, and I don't have as many different bins to go through when reviewing or doing. Here are mine at the moment:
    @MyWife'sName (discussions/decisions/etc)
    @ComputerOnline, with subcontext @Computer
    @Errands
    @Home
    @Kids
    @Office
    @Outdoors
    @Phone

Nice ideas,

If anyone knows how to edit the poll, I tried to have a 20+ but it did not take for some reason,

I have many of the same ones as others, but then I've also added contexts for people that I need to speak with often:
@work
@computer
@errand
@home
@phone
@waiting for
@web
~conference center
~church
~elders
~wife
~boss
~youth

:MOD: In case anyone's interested, a "16+" option has now been added to the poll, for people with >15 contexts.

@Parents (usually means something to do for them or at their home…computer troubleshooting, family meetings…)
@Errands
@Home
@iBook
@iMac
@Mac (something I can or have to do on both)
@Mail
@Meet
@None (Out of the Inbox but doesn't have a real context because I can do it anywhere like learning vocabulary for a language)
@Office
@Online
@Phone
@Read
@context for each library where I lend or return books (since I introduced that in my context-list I've never had to pay reminder charges again ;))

@University

I go with the "few" but my contexts contain information about the type of action, not merely the place which is implicit.

Contact
Read
Write note
Write doc
Plan
Effect at home
Effect elsewhere
Money

"Contact" usually means telephone but could be a very short e-mail.
"Read" is a distinct activity. I have to do quite a bit of it and need a quiet place.
Otherwise, anything written is a note (a few minutes at most; typically an e-mail) or else writing which involves either research or creativity.
"Plan" is there to capture thinking which may include outlining or similar.
"Effect" means to do something which involves not being at a desk, e.g. "feed the birds" or "get tyres for the car".
I keep money in its own category because actions related to it have special importance.

In priorities, I have Active, Pending, Waiting, Unallocated. Note that for me, Waiting is a priority, not a context.

I know these are far from classical GTD categories but I hope you find some of the ideas interesting.
